Rachel Carson's pioneer literary work Silent Spring turned 50 years old on September 27, 2012. Below are photos by Phil Norton taken in 1986 at her homestead in Springdale, Pennsylvania along the Allegheny River east of Pittsburgh. She was born here on May 27, 1907.
